ELGAR Variations on an Original Theme “Enigma”
It’s a harmonic convergence of distinguished women in music. DSO favorite Anne-Marie McDermott joins with Estonian conductor Anu Tali for Amy Beach’s Piano Concerto and Alisson Kruusmaa’s ethereal Arabesques. Elgar’s crowning achievement, Enigma Variations, hides an unsolved mystery that has puzzled music sleuths for more than a century: what is that Original Theme? No one has ever discovered it. But we do know that he’s portraying 14 friends, disguised in irresistible tunes and “inside jokes,” with the soaring heart of the work — the stirring “Nimrod” Variation — paying tribute to a beloved friend.

George Whitefield Chadwick – “Jubilee” from Symphonic Sketches
Amy Beach – Piano Concerto
Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony #5
New England positively shines in newly appointed Artistic Director Mei-Ann Chen’s first concert under her new title, featuring works by two of the “Boston Six” and America’s first great composers, Lowell, Massachusetts born George Whitefield Chadwick, and Henniker, New Hampshire born Amy Beach. Chadwick’s exhilarating ‘Jubilee’ from Symphonic Sketches sets the tone, with the composer’s unique energy and nod to Dvorak. The first-ever piano concerto written by an American woman follows; the Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, Op. 45 composed by Amy Beach and premiered by Boston Symphony Orchestra. Emotional swells and turbulent aural waves of passionate sound spin a story that, according to the composer, is a romantic autobiography. Juxtaposed against these works is a cornerstone of Western music – Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, with its unforgettable four-note opening motive seemingly representing FATE knocking on the door!

Bravo! Vail Soirée IV
Two principal players of the New York Philharmonic join Bravo! Vail Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott for an evening of chamber music, or as Mozart called it, “music of friends.” Appropriately enough for a soirée, the finale to Beethoven’s lighthearted trio features a theme-and-variations finale on a popular tune of the time, Pria ch’io l’impegno (“Before beginning this awesome task, I need a snack”). Having enjoyed an illustrious career, Brahms declared it finished: “I have worked enough; now let the young folks take over.” In early 1891, however, he encountered the clarinet playing of Richard Mühlfeld and was inspired to compose once again, writing four final chamber works, all featuring the clarinet. This trio is perhaps less well known than others (notably the beloved Clarinet Quintet) but is nonetheless a masterpiece of thematic variation, lyrical invention, and elegance.
